Retcon

Paizo referred to all kholo as gnolls until the publication of The Mwangi Expanse, and renamed all gnolls to kholo across Player Core, GM Core, and Monster Core. This change also altered many of the ancestry's behavioral, biological, and social traits, and distanced or removed past references to sloth and slavery as inherent traits.

Kholo also became a mechanically playable ancestry in The Mwangi Expanse, are included as possible player ancestry in both Player Core and GM Core, and are detailed as a playable ancestry in Player Core 2. Player Core 2 also provides considerable details and additional retcons of past behaviors ascribed to kholo/gnolls in past works.

The direct renaming of the entire gnoll ancestry to "kholo" is not made explicit in any published canon text as of April 2024 but was confirmed by James Jacobs in February 2024.

Due to a lack of canon clarifications or new canon material about the kholo of Katapesh, many of these details remain published on PathfinderWiki as canon and have been moved to Katapeshi kholo. Those contents might also change as new canon information is published. Note that slavery in Katapesh was abolished by the Pactmasters as an in-universe canon event taking place in 4722 AR; references to gnoll or kholo slavers on PathfinderWiki reflect events prior to that point in the setting and should be updated to clarify as much if necessary. For details, see Slavery.

For a version of the article that was previously located at gnoll prior to these changes, see revision 474220. For a version of the article specifically about Mwangi Expanse kholo prior to these changes, see revision 449654. -Oznogon (talk) 19:49, 18 August 2024 (UTC)
