Terra-cotta warriors are constructs, artificial soldiers built of terra-cotta but infused with the soul of an actual mortal. A terra-cotta soldier is an individual warrior but many can be brought together to form a powerful terra-cotta garrison where the individual soldiers fight together.

Appearance

Terra-cotta soldiers generally appear similar to how they did in life, most commonly as a human soldier some six feet tall, weighing about 600 pounds. However, they are also sometimes sculpted into the likeness of more fearsome forms to make them more intimidating. These terra-cotta soldiers often resemble mortal races like hobgoblins and tengus and even more ferocious extraplanar creatures like demons and onis. They are also sometimes painted with lacquer and decorated to make them more impressive.

Habitat and ecology

Terra-cotta soldiers are often built to guard the tombs of rich, powerful rulers. Unlike most constructs, due to how they are created, terra-cotta soldiers are able to think and often employ complex tactics and can wield a variety of weapons. Terra-cotta archers can be created that are able to wield ranged weapons and even terra-cotta horsemen as cavalry that are sculpted with terra-cotta horses as a part of them. Terra-cotta soldiers are normally created using the actual soul of a once-living creature.

On Golarion

Terra-cotta soldiers are most commonly associated with the Tian Xia nation of Lingshen. Lingshen is a highly militaristic society and, upon death, the most respected warriors are crafted into terra-cotta soldiers. These terra-cotta soldiers are created in a place known as the Cradle of Immortality where human wizards collaborate with powerful underworld dragons to create vast armies of these immortal warriors.

In Minkai, Emperor Teikoku Kenshiro founded the Monument Park within the Imperial Palace in Kasai to honour faithful samurai. Here, a dozen powerful terra-cotta soldiers stand on guard, perched on stone pedestals and armed with a katana and a wakizashi. Each pedestal has a plaque naming the hero it represents.

Terra-cotta soldiers are also employed within the Inner Sea region. For instance, Earl Calhadion Vernisant uses terra-cotta horsemen as part of the security for his villa in Oppara.
