Joseung sajas (pronounced jo-seung sah-jah), also known as reapers, are psychopomps who guide souls to the Boneyard for judgment. They strongly oppose ijhyeojins, who are formed from joseung sajas who abandon their duties.1
Appearance
Joseung sajas are pale psychopomps with sunken eyes.1
Abilities
As guides to the restless souls of recently deceased mortals, joseung sajas can selectively erase memories that tether the soul to the Universe, such as painful or inconvenient memories.1
Joseung sajas can speak several languages, including Celestial, Chthonian, Diabolic, and Requian. They also possess truespeech.1
Joseung sajas often wield longswords and infuse them with their touch, which is especially harmful to the living and undead alike. They can shift between being corporeal and incorporeal at will, and can also make themselves invisible at will.1
Ecology
Mortals who commit great sins and die sometimes become joseung sajas, though the criteria for their creation is unknown. All who become joseung sajas have their memories wiped clean until they have atoned their mortal sins through service to the Boneyard.1
This service includes guiding restless souls to judgment, a process which begins with the joseung saja's appearance near the mortal's death. They can aid the soul's progression toward the River of Souls by selectively removing painful or problematic memories that hold it back. As this requires the joseung saja to enter the Universe to prevent the formation of ghosts and other restless undead from those who die violently or tragically—or to destroy those who succumb to undeath—they are among the psychopomps most commonly encountered by living mortals.1
Some joseung sajas retain their title and form even after completing their atonement and become hunters of ijhyeojins. Despite these sahkils being formed from joseung sajas, these reapers consider them to be little more than overstaying souls. Should they reap all of a ijhyeojin's memories, the joseung saja can revert the sahkil to its psychopomp form.1
