Thasteron is a mineral on the planet Akiton, where it is refined into a liquid fuel of the same name used in many applications of Akitonian technology and as a component of an explosively volatile propellant similar to—but otherwise incompatible with—Golarion's black powder.

Appearance

Raw thasteron is a mildly radioactive mineral ore with a shimmering green hue. While short-term exposure to radioactive thasteron is harmless, long-term exposure can degrade most living creatures' health.

Refinement

Raw mineral thasteron can be refined into a liquid fuel, and industrial facilities such as those in the Industrial District of the Akitonian city of Seldo specialize in technological thasteron refinement. Thasteron mining and refinement is a major economic force on Akiton, but the substance is typically not traded off-world as most nearby planets lack the technology to use it.

Alchemically modified khefaks known as thasteron khefaks can consume radioactive materials and convert them into refined thasteron secretions, but the creatures' resulting mild but sickening radioactivity makes them difficult to breed.

Uses

Refined thasteron has many technological uses. It can power appliances, including cooking stoves, and propel vehicles such as sand racers, which fuse magic and thasteron technology.

Thasteron firearms, such as shobhad longrifles, are rare on Akiton and practically unheard of on Golarion. Refined thasteron can also be fashioned into alchemical bombs similar to alchemist's fire.

Liquid thasteron is highly toxic, and only fools would drink it.
