Earth (planet)
- This article covers the distant planet. For the element, see Element. For the elemental plane, see Plane of Earth.
Earth, also known as Jasoom,1 is a planet in an unknown galaxy2 yet similar in many ways to Golarion. Magic was once as prevalent on Earth as it is on Golarion, but as time wore on magic and mysticism were replaced by science and technology, and now magical creatures have all but disappeared from the world and the existence of the supernatural is known to only a few mystics.3
In 4713 AR (known as AD 1918 on Earth), a bitter and deadly war between several of Earth's major political powers, known as the Great War, finally came to an end after four years of global conflict.3
Gazetteer
Earth is a world as vast as Golarion, but only a few locations are relevant to Golarion-based scholars:
- Antarctica, a frozen landmass at Earth's south pole and the coldest area on the planet4
- The vast Arabian Desert5
- Empty Quarter, a dune sea within the Arabian Desert5
- The Old Kingdom of Kemet, also known as Egypt, a nation sharing a culture and a pantheon6 with Osirion7
- France; in eldritch Carcosa in another distant solar system, there is the Paris nexus, a strange copy of the streets of the French capital8
- R'lyeh, an underground domain and home of Cthulhu9
- Russia, a vast empire that spans much of Earth's northeastern landmass3
- The Pontic-Caspian Steppe, an extensive plain inhabited by various peoples over history and birthplace of Baba Yaga10
Inhabitants
The primary inhabitants of Earth are humans of countless ethnicities. A few magical creatures such as fey still exist on Earth, but are largely forgotten.11
Cthulhu, one of the mightiest of the Great Old Ones, dwells in the corpse-city of R'lyeh beneath one of Earth's oceans.9
Technology
Compared to Golarion, Earth's contemporary technology is relatively advanced and includes harnessing electricity, the development of radios and telephones, and improvements in medicine.12 Firearms, grenades, explosives, and chemical weapons on Earth are also dramatically more advanced than on Golarion.13
Certain locations on Earth were also connected to the First World through a form of arcane technology known as the World Engine and its accompanying World Anchors.14 Rasputin, a son of Baba Yaga, combined his occult prowess with the electrical technology of Serbian inventor Nikola Tesla in an attempt to entrap Baba Yaga using the World Engine.15
Nearby planets
Earth's solar system includes at least one other inhabited planet, the fourth, known as Mars by those on Earth and Barsoom by its inhabitants. The Martians themselves refer to Earth as Jasoom.1
