In the distant past, cyclopean seers who venerated a figure now known only as the Second Dragon led pilgrims from Iobaria to the lands that would later become Brevoy. These migrants were called the Firespeakers and allied with local warlords, exchanging their services in healing, scholarship, mediation, and prophecy for a safe, neutral territory of their own.
In 2009 AR, settlers from Taldor annexed land in the wake of the Fifth Army of Exploration, with the settler Lysius Corcina claiming the Firespeakers' home in pursuit of the hills' copper resources. Corcina destroyed the Firespeakers' temple and founded a fortress later known as Hartsfall Keep on the site, ending generations of peace. Warlords fought over the site for centuries to follow until it was partially destroyed in an earthquake in 2920 AR.
The Taldan colony became known as Rostland, while the independent lands to the north were called Issia. Velimir Orlovsky, a member of the Issian House Orlovsky, later founded Zmeyka near the site of Hartsfall Keep to mine the hills' copper. In 4499 AR, Rostland and Issia were both conquered by Choral the Conqueror of Iobaria, uniting them into the nation of Brevoy and delegating control of the lands including Zmeyka to House Surtova.
Choral's House Rogarvia vanished in 4699 AR in a mysterious event known as the Vanishing, and to try to sway House Orlovsky to support House Surtova, the Surtovans designated Zmeyka as a neutral territory. The land remained contested through the Brevic houses' ongoing disputes,2 though longtime Baron Oberion Vohonich kept the rival houses at peace in Zmeyka until his death in 4717 AR.4
