Greater nightmares, sometimes called cauchemars, are a more dangerous variant of the flaming horses from Abaddon known as nightmares. Cauchemars are particularly valued for their ability to travel the planes.

Cauchemars have worked with devourers to help them cross planes.

As mounts

Cauchemars have served as the mounts of powerful beings, such as the Gray Friar of Tar-Baphon, the ifrit prince Jhavhul, and the Lord of Stolen Flame.

On Golarion

Cauchemars have been encountered in Taldor, Ustalav, Varisia, and Xopatl.

A cauchemar nightmare known as Shadowlass served the night hag coven called the Sisters of Indulgent Dreams in 4718 AR.
