Ships pass through the Arch of Aroden, a key location for the Chelaxian Navy.

Cheliax's navy is one of the largest in Avistan and patrols both the Inner Sea and to a lesser extent, the coastal areas of the northern Arcadian Ocean (the southern coast of the Arcadian Ocean is most-heavily patrolled by the Free Captains of the Shackles). Since 4137 AR, the Chelaxian Navy, or the Chelish Navy1 or Imperial Navy of Cheliax, has controlled the vital Arch of Aroden and the shipping lanes that rely on it.23 Its home port is Ostenso4 in eastern Cheliax, with major presences in Corentyn and Kintargo.5

Chelaxian Marines

The navy maintains a force of Chelaxian Marines known for being subjects of experiments that turn them into the feared ocean-bound sea-sworn.8

Engagements

A Chelaxian Navy warship battles a pirate sloop in the Shackles.

Active

  • The Chelaxian Navy constantly contests the activity of the Andoren Navy in small actions that fall just short of open warfare.3
  • The Chelaxian Navy has no tolerance for pirates and opposes them throughout the Inner Sea and into the Shackles. However, the Shackles' Pirate Lords count among their members a former Chelaxian admiral, Arronax Endymion.10 Since the capture of the Arch of Aroden, the Chelaxian navy has been able to curtail pirates' access to the Inner Sea.3
  • The Navy enforces Chelaxian rule over rebellious cities and territories through brutal, and often destructive, methods.

Historical

  • The Chelaxian Navy and army captured the Arch of Aroden from Garundi forces in 4137 AR.18
  • The brutal pirate ship Storm Shark, led by the notorious Captain Dargi, sank several Chelaxian Navy ships ca. 4620 AR and killed all aboard.19
  • Decades prior to 4720 AR, a young Kerkis of House Damaq volunteered to lead a ship in the Chelaxian Navy's defense of Corentyn against pirate raiders. The Navy's and pirates' brutality left Kerkis traumatized.20
  • A gang of Firebrands led by Hominy Seaborn captured the Chelaxian Navy ship Interloper and repurposed it as a smuggling vessel.21
