People come from all manner of backgrounds: they have differences such as ancestry, ethnicity, and religion. People are also differently skilled: some are mighty fighters, devout followers of gods, or perhaps masters in the ways of magic. Scholars tend to categorize these skilled differences as classes. Occasionally the term has been defined to include those who exhibit few special characteristics and were classed by their role in life: perhaps as aristocrats or mere commoners. However, the term is predominantly used to discuss people with potential for heroic capabilities who can grow to the heights of power with experience in their class.12

Those who master a specialized set of skills or achieve an exceptional level of power often become members of a prestige class. Such classes represent a further specialization in certain fields, whether in devotion to a faith or doctrine, loyalty to an organization, or through otherwise unparalleled competency.3
