Playtest

Secrets of Magic Class Playtest, a Pathfinder Second Edition playtest document written by Logan Bonner, Lyz Liddell, and Mark Seifter, was released on September 8, 2020, as a free PDF download. The playtesting period ran through October 16, 2020.

You've found the not-so-secret playtest for Secrets of Magic! This upcoming sourcebook, scheduled for July 2021, brings you loads of new spells, magic items, special types of magic, and information about the inner workings of magic. But this playtest? It's all about the two new classes! Your insight into these classes will be vital as we prepare them for the final book.

  • The magus combines spells with attacks. The classic concept of the warrior-mage hybrid lives here. The test will show whether this class outshines martial characters or spellcasters, or whether it balances its two sides in a satisfying way that feels special. The magus gets fewer spell slots, though the slots' spell levels get as high as a wizard's!
  • The summoner is for the player who wants to adventure alongside a cool sidekick! A powerful entity called an eidolon holds a supernatural connection with the summoner, sharing health and working in tandem. This class also casts spells but has fewer per day than other spellcasting classes.

Livestream campaign

Secrets of Magic was a Pathfinder Second Edition live-play Twitch stream from Paizo Inc. The ten-episode series debuted on July 14, 2021, and ran until September 15, 2021. It was meant to show off new rules options and thematic elements from the Secrets of Magic sourcebook, which was released near the end of the series's run.

Four esteemed graduates from the College of Mysteries in Absalom are sent to a tiny desert village in eastern Thuvia along the banks of the Junira River. Rumor has it that everyone in this small community has suddenly developed magical abilities. Power that, if left unchecked, might spell their doom. Perhaps even more troubling, even those who just visit the town receive powers as well! Can these four spell-slinging scholars work together to get to the bottom of this mystery before rogue magic tears the place apart?
