Jaathoom
Djinni
More information about this subject might be available on StarfinderWiki. |
Jaathooms,1 also known as djinn (pronounced JIHN; singular djinni),2 are genies from the Elemental Plane of Air.3
Appearance
A jaathoom is about 10½ feet tall and weighs about 1,000 pounds. Its lower torso trails away into a misty vortex.4[citation needed]
Ecology
Jaathooms are said to be made of the stuff of clouds and possess the strength of storms. They can procreate with humans, producing sylph offspring.45
Jaathoom shuyookhs
About one of every hundred jaathooms are jaathoom shuyookhs,16 who were also called noble jaathooms or viziers.71 They often deal in dreams and nightmares.1
Their wish magic is often impressive in presentation to the detriment of quality,8 and shaped by their visions of the requester's future.1 Their fashion is similarly ostentatious, and many wear clothing made of brighly colored fabrics and flashy jewelery that reflects their individual tastes.1 A jaathoom's scarf can confer a jaathom shuyookh's favor and abilities to one who wears it.9
Society
Jaathooms are carefree, scholarly, mercantile beings, who welcome new experiences and enjoy learning from others. Despite their openness, jaathooms are—like all genies—quick to patronise non-genies and remind others that they are the masters of the Plane of Air since time immemorial, which has earned them a reputation of being insufferable.10 Their sprawling libraries and museums are full of knowledge and treasure from the entire Great Beyond, but the condescending jaathooms only allow their kind and geniekin open access to the libraries without having to contribute something.117
Jaathooms can understand, but not speak, Common tongues and Sussuran. They can also telepathically project images, but not speech, into others' minds.1 They sometimes employ blustering gales as heralds12 and keep comozant wyrds as pets.13
The jaathooms' leader is Sultan Zafer XXXVIII, who rules over the Jaathoom Empire from the Sussuran Palace in Armun Kelisk. The empire is divided into regions, each led by a jaathoom shuyookh who rules from their capital city.1114
Jaathooms are usually friendly with faydhaans,15 janns, and many of the Plane of Air's natives. They often come to blows with jabalis,16 whom they consider overly stiff, and are arch-enemies of ifrits.17 The conflict between jaathooms and ifrits is legendary, and it is possible to earn a jaathoom's service by promising to fight ifrits.1118
Jaathooms disdain physical combat, preferring to use their magical powers and aerial abilities against foes. A jaathoom overmatched in combat usually takes flight and becomes a whirlwind to harass those who follow.4[citation needed]
Some speculate that the mysterious metal spheres scattered across the Plane of Air are the prisons or remnants of some long-defeated foe. The jaathooms refuse to acknowledge these rumours or touch these spheres,11 some of which opened alongside the return of the Planes of Wood and Metal.19
On Golarion
Jaathooms live in the Meraz Desert of Qadira.20 The jaathoom Safa is a venture-captain in the Pathfinder Society.21
In the Great Beyond
The gemstone merchant Lady Dariya operates Lady Daryia's Dazzling Emporium in Shadow Absalom of the Netherworld.1
