Red reaver
- This article covers the creature. For the tavern in Starfall, see Red Reaver.
Red reavers are highly territorial magical beasts that resemble gorillas with small wings.1
Appearance
A red reaver is a large creature with a body and limbs that resemble a red-fleshed gorilla's, a long swept skull with six small eyes, and atrophied wings that are nonetheless magically functional.1
Abilities
Red reavers are easily distracted by beauty; they quickly focus on any beautiful performance at the expense of ignoring other non-threatening actions in their purview, and many lair in and become highly protective of locations of beauty. When angered, they can be ferocious combatants with rending claws, a terrifying roar, and a limited ability to fly short distances. They are immune to magical forms of sleep, can see in the dark, and can understand Jotun.1
A red reaver can weigh up to 4,500 pounds, and their mass often leaves behind visible indentations in the earth after rough landings from their short flights.2
Ecology
Red reavers are omnivorous creatures who lair in wild caves near sources of food, often close to bodies of water where they can catch fish and hunt larger animals. Their fascination with beauty often draws them to lair near places of natural beauty, and the creatures have been observed staring transfixed by sunsets or their own reflections. Tales also suggest red reavers have been attracted by the performances of bards only to fly into a murderous rage when the exhausted performer must stop.2
Red reavers are distantly related creatures to gray renders and battle these similarly powerful creatures on sight. While their conflicts are often single-minded and violent, they are rarely fatal.2
Habitat and society
Red reavers are typically solitary creatures who guard their lairs but otherwise do not seek conflict. However, they lack intelligence, have short tempers, and often misinterpret others' actions, all tendencies that draw others unwittingly into dangerous conflicts with them.12
On Golarion
The most notorious red reaver in the Inner Sea region inhabited the long-abandoned settlement of Roslar's Coffer2345 from 4708 AR to its defeat at the hand of Pathfinders and the Burning Sun tribe in 4718 AR.678
Red reavers have also been encountered in Andoran,29 the West Bandu Hills near Desperation Bay,2 and Shoanti-inhabited regions of Varisia.10 Red reavers have also been captured and forced to participate in combat tournaments, including Green Blood on a Black Rock in the Sodden Lands11 and the Viper Cage of Ilizmagorti,2 where the creatures have an earned history of success and popularity.112
