The Chertel family is one of the three lumber families of Otari. They own the Chertel Timber company, and reside in the Chertel Manor. The Chertels relocated from Diobel to Otari centuries ago, alongside the Inkleholtz family who own the Whistledown Cutters lumber company. Both companies broke off from the Kortos Consortium in favor of sharing the Otari Mill constructed by Maklanni Menhemes, the founder of Otari Lumber.

However, in recent years, the Kortos Consortium has tried to regain their control over the Isle of Kortos lumber industry through illicit operations, including the infiltration and sabotage of the Chertel family business. This has lead the head of the family, Wrab Chertel, to falsely suspect the Inkleholtz family and Menhemes family of foul play.
