Otari Lumber
Otari Lumber is the smallest and oldest of the three lumber companies in Otari, and the owner of the Otari Mill. The other two companies—Whistledown Cutters and Chertel Timber—generate much of the company's income by paying to use the mill.12
This family business was started by Maklanni Menhemes, and is currently managed by her descendant Oseph Menhemes, the mayor of Otari. Oseph tries to separate his roles as politician and businessman by managing the company in the afternoons after taking care of his duties as mayor.1
History
Otari was a small but prosperous fishing village until the last of its founders, Aesephna Menhemes, died in 4290 AR. The remaining residents soon relocated elsewhere and by 4294 AR Otari was completely abandoned. A group of kobolds called the Stonescales seized the opportunity to take over the village in 4300 AR until a group of adventurers backed by Aesephna's granddaughter Maklanni wiped them out a decade later. Although the adventurers moved on, she had other plans.34
Maklanni desired to revitalize Otari as a lumber town, however, the steep cliffs surrounding the settlement complicated the transportation of wood.3 Her solution was the Otari Flume,5 which uses water from the Osprey River to move lumber from the Immenwood directly to the Otari Mill, commonly called the Giant's Wheel by locals. The massive waterwheel powers the mill's saws and the mechanized treadmill that loads processed wood into the loading section of the flume. This delivers wood further south to a loading chute, which extends to the harbor below across the 200-foot-tall (61 m) cliffside.1
The construction of the Otari Mill and flume system was completed in 4323 AR,4 bringing Maklanni both wealth and new enemies. Otari Lumber shattered the control the Kortos Consortium in Diobel once had over the lumber industry on the Isle of Kortos. Additionally, two of their smaller companies broke off to settle in Otari and paid Maklanni for the use of her lumberyard.
Members
The Otari Lumber company is owned and managed by Oseph Menhemes, however, its daily administrative duties are carried out by a half-orc foreman named Klorte Hengus in the Otari Mill.1
Sites
All of Maklanni Menhemes' inventions are the property of Otari Lumber, including the Otari Flume, Otari Mill, and the loading chute that extends into a loading platform built directly into the harbor for easy transportation throughout the Inner Sea region.3 Besides the Otari Mill, Oseph Menhemes also manages his business from the Menhemes Manor.1
Relationships
Due to the shared lumber delivery and processing system, the three lumber companies of Otari—Otari Lumber, Whistledown Cutters and Chertel Timber—try to maintain an amicable relationship out of necessity. However, the Kortos Consortium seeks to sow discord among them, aiming to undermine Otari's lumber industry through infiltration.3 Their covert tactics have misled Wrab Chertel, owner of Chertel Timber, to suspect the other two companies of sabotaging his business. 2
