This article covers the orc demigod. For the creature that he became, see Verex-That-Was.

Verex, also known as the Blood God and the Despoiler, was the orc god of lust, devastation, and pillage. Whereas followers of Nulgreth simply seek the deaths of their enemies, the faithful of Verex sought to destroy them wholly, take all they once had, and pillage the rest.12

As some time around 4724 AR, Verex was corrupted by Rovagug and transformed from a divine entity into a Spawn of Rovagug known as Verex-That-Was.34

Appearance

Verex was often depicted as a gold-eyed orc rogue wearing studded leather armor, and the Despoiler was said to read the desires of any being who locked eyes with him.2

Religious symbol

Verex's religious symbol was a rat gripping a gold piece with both paws.2

Relationships

Verex in turn befriended and betrayed every deity in the orc pantheon, but he mostly avoided Zagresh for the Destroyer's lack of valuable possessions to steal.2

Worship

Whereas deities of thievery in other pantheons are often worshiped in secret, Verex was venerated openly among orcs. His most fervent followers were thieves and grifters, raiders, and rogues, whom he rewarded for plundering whatever they desired by force.2

Orcs who worshiped Verex prefered ambush tactics over attacking in hordes, and often deployed diplomacy when facing a foe they could not defeat. They valued and pursued the amassing of wealth, lovers, and slaves through guile over victory in battle.2

Orcs praised Verex when they acquired valuable treasures from raids, while those who misplaced an item or became victims of theft often cursed the Despoiler's name.2
