The many Kara horse tribes of the Grass Sea in Casmaron dominate the steppes of Karazh, and the tribes and Karazh draw their name from their shared Kara ethnicity. The thirteen most powerful tribes are known as the "Great Tribes".
While each nomadic tribe is largely independent and led by an individual who holds the title of han, recent years have seen the tribes also united under the leadership of a single hakan, or "Horse King", who is typically based in the permanent settlement of Ular Kel.1 As of 4715 AR, the hakan was Ulzhan of the Kaskyrbai tribe.21
