Adventurers attempt to frame a structure using lumber.

Wood is a versatile fibrous organic material that comprises the supporting structure of trees and similar plants. It is a widely used resource in crafting and building,1 a prominent trade good, and can be burned as fuel.23 Wood processed into uniform shapes for construction is referred to as lumber or timber.34

Appearance

Wood is as diverse as the trees from which it is harvested. Most range from light to dark brown, with other colors such as black ebony wood being rarer.256

Types of wood are also often broadly categorized by hardness into hardwoods and softwoods. Hardwoods, for example, are used in flooring and flatware,7 entry doors,8 and bartops,9 and are slightly more resistant to fire than other types of wood.10

In heavily forested regions of Golarion, such as Andoran15 and Shenmen,16 logging and lumber production are prominent economic drivers. The lumber lords and barons of the Successor States1617 and Lumber Consortium of Andoran18 often wield significant influence in their local governments.

Andoren fir is common and cheap in the Inner Sea region, costing as little as 1 copper piece for 40 board feet of lumber. Darkmoon mahogany wood, Holomogi heartwood, duskwood,3 and softwood paueliel19 are more expensive and lucrative.

Blackwood trees produce a light, tough, and water-resistant wood also known as blackwood that is popular in Taldan shipbuilding. The last domain of blackwood trees is the Verduran Forest, which is protected by the druids of Wildwood Lodge2021 who limit the logging of the trees based on the Treaty of the Wildwood signed hundreds of years ago.22

Wood products also often fuel regional trade in finished products. Woodworked crafts from Kyonin and hardwoods from Nirmathas are common trade goods around Lake Encarthan,23 and the Zenj lumber trade helped build Kibwe from a small trading post into a prominent economic center.24 Sharrowsmith's Exports is also known for trading in hardwoods from Nantambu.25

Wood is used in jewelery as an affordable alternative material to precious metals and gemstones, and in mobility aids such as walking canes.26

Many settlements have carpenters to perform carpentry, and larger settlements such as Magnimar have carpenters' guilds.27

Lumberers, which include lumberjacks who chop down trees, work in the lumber trade.28 A few even rise to the level of celebrity, such as the "Aerobatic Lumberjack" Dingo Dray of the Immenwood.29 Sawyers operate mills where wood is processed.30

In architecture

Wood is the most common and easiest material to work with and transport for construction,1 and can be used to build both sturdy and makeshift structures.3132 Wood is processed into lumber at mills.33 However, as an organic material wood is also prone to rotting and splintering over time and exposure to moisture,34 and can be protected with finishes of oil, wax, or lacquer.35

A small cottage built from wood can cost approximately 300 gold pieces to purchase or 20 gold pieces per month to rent, both considerably less than their sturdier stone equivalents.36

The Earthbound architecture style, which suggests all buildings should be made from local materials, favors wood and other natural materials.37

In magic

Particularly skilled or experienced woodworkers can detect the presence of magic in items made of wood.38

In cuisine

Wood can be burned as a fuel for cooking, and meats can be cooked over smoky wood for flavor.39 Most Inner Sea region homes have ovens that burn wood.3 Sap from wood can be refined into syrup, such as the birch syrup popularly paired with fried butter cakes in Immenwood.40
