The one-armed Jol Haverston is the owner and manager of Haverston's Grange, the most successful general goods store in the Varisian city of Kaer Maga. He lost his left arm in a magical accident when he was apprenticed to a wizard as a young man, and now carries a deep-seated mistrust of magic of all types. He believes that relying on magic is for the weak of mind and that ingenuity can solve anything. No one knows exactly what happened, but the arm was taken off without leaving so much as a scar. Generally friendly to anyone, he grows cold and distant towards obvious spellcasters.
