Pathfinder Second Edition content
This article covers a term or subject that is relevant to the Pathfinder campaign setting only in the context of Pathfinder Second Edition or Pathfinder Lost Omens.

A cathartic mage is a practitioner of cathartic magic, a specialized style of magic that focuses on unleashing the spellcaster's raw, pent-up emotions.1

Cathartic magic places the caster in a similar emotional state as a barbarian's rage, but is not limited to anger—awe, dedication, fear, hatred, joy, love, misery, pride, and remorse are equally viable sources of catharsis. Each emotional focus has a specific trigger, benefit, and aftermath, and can also grant access to focus spells.2

Cathartic magic is difficult to master; practitioners of cathartic magic often find themselves fatigued or in physical pain after tapping into their deepest feelings, and it can take time to regain control of their minds. Most cathartic mages find a mundane, centering activity such as meditation to help them regain control of themselves.1

Cathartic magic can spontaneously develop if a spellcaster is exposed to an event that triggers a particularly powerful emotional reaction.1
