Mathematics
(Redirected from Mathematician)
Mathematics is the study of quantity, space, structure, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures.1
Areas of mathematics
Mathematics can be divided into a number of areas of study, such as arithmetic and geometry.1
Some areas of mathematics once studied on Golarion have been lost to time, such as, non-uniform spatial mathematics, which was studied to an advanced level in Ancient Azlant around 10,000 years ago. Evidence for this was found on the King Xeros ether ship that docked in Absalom in 4709 AR.2
Religion
- Abadar appreciates mathematics as necessary for ordered societies to function, especially in regards to fair taxation.
- Brigh values mathematics very highly as it is the basis of engineering and design.3
- Imot, the Symbol of Doom, is the psychopomp usher of mathematics and is worshipped by many mathematicians.4
- Mammon is known to be a genius-level mathematician.5
- Otolmens is the primordial inevitable of machinery, mathematics, and physics.6
Organizations
- The Cult of the Last Theorem: A faction in the lost city of Tumen in Osirion researching the Pharaoh of Numbers to unlock dark powers of lost mathematics. They know that the integers 56 and 11 were significant both spiritually and mathematically to the pharaoh.7
- Katheer: Katheer is renowned for dozens of academies of mathematics within its boundaries.8
- Pathfinder Society: Not a mathematical society as such, but Pathfinder mathematicians working for Shevala Iorae discovered an entry into the siege castle called the Spire of Nex, near Absalom.910
- University of Lepidstadt: Mathematics is one of the subjects of special interest taught at this university.11
Publications
- Manual of the Order of the Palatine Eye: mathematics forms an important part of this secretive work1213
- The Last Theorem is a cryptic and perpetually shifting work of obscure mathematics and numerology, and is said to be linked to the Final Theorem and Aucturn Enigma.14
Influential mathematicians
- Axiomites: Each axiomite is actually an immortal construct of living, intelligent mathematics approximating a humanoid shape.1516
- Bronze dragons: Bronze dragons are natural mathematicians and some numerologists have made great contributions to advanced mathematics; there is a small group called Bryemirites who are devoted to finding a perfect number of importance to dragonkind.17
- Alendru Ghoroven: A teacher in mathematics in Ravengro, Ustalav.18
- Green dragons: Green dragons are the chromatic mathematicians and have made some major discoveries in mathematics and astronomy.19 Their hoards are known to often contain rare books of mathematics and numerology.20
- Theorex Khai, the Enumerator: The leader of the Cult of the Last Theorem is a genius in mathematics.21
Mathematical creatures
- Rokyamuts are inevitable defenders of mathematics and geometry; they engage to attack those who undermine the fundamental laws of reality.22
