The infernal duke Canzoriant is credited with creating the first hobgoblins and imbuing them with their innate hatred of elves.123

History

Canzoriant was known for his pursuits in breeding more powerful slaves and conquering others.4

Creation of hobgoblins

During the Age of Darkness,4 Cantorys—an ancient goddess of life, forests, and transformation—once crafted a powerful staff known as the Cantorian Spring and hid it on Golarion, in the expectation that a mortal would find and use it.1 However, after learning of the staff, Canzoriant killed Cantorys and claimed it for himself.13

Either he1 or his cultists25 used the staff to transform goblins into the first hobgoblins and instilled in them a hatred for elves.145 Canzoriant's goal was the creation of an army that would tear through elven defenses and raze their cities.4

The plot was discovered by a band of elven adventurers, who attempted to recover and destroy the Cantorian Spring.145 While they successfully reacquired it, they failed to destroy it before their pursuers caught up to them. The staff was lost in the ensuing battle and has been missing since, inadvertently freeing the hobgoblins from outside control in the process.54

Fate

Canzoriant was defeated during a failed coup of Asmodeus, and his fate is unknown.4
