Baku is an immense serpentine kaiju hibernating in the deeps beneath Minata. Many of the barrier reefs of the archipelago were formed from the remains of sea dragons killed by Baku during the Age of Dragons. He is since remembered in tales as "Baku, the Moon Eater", sometimes as a dragon himself,12 reminding Minatans that he may at any point reawaken.3

Background

Baku's famous awakening during the Age of Dragons was caused by the battle between two powerful dragons and their allies: the radiant lunar dragon Lihulan and her seven sisters, and the young sea dragon Mugayan and one hundred of his own siblings. These opposed dragons competed to direct the future of Minata but abandoned such ambitions after surviving Baku's rampage that had slaughtered many of their allies. In the aftermath, the sated kaiju returned to slumber deep beneath Minata while Lihulan and Mugayan vacated the isles, leaving the archipelago to Baku.3

In one famous instance, the local hero Chois Yeo detected signs that Baku was stirring but managed to lull the kaiju back into deep slumber with a xylophone constructed from mermaid-scales. For this heroic deed, he is now among the great ancestral heroes frequently celebrated during the Minatan holiday of Katigulangan.1
