Wolf
Wolves are predatory canines that hunt alone or in packs and are quite territorial. They vary is height from two-and-a-half feet to three feet at the shoulder and generally weigh anywhere between 45 to 150 pounds. Females of a species tend to be slightly smaller than the males. Their coats range widely in color from grey to brown or even black among some species. Their most well-known feature is their mournful howl, with which they communicate to pack members and other wolves.2[citation needed]
Species
- Desert wolf
- Variety of wolf living in desert areas, for instance, in Casmaron.3
- Dire wolf
- Giant, primordial wolves with aggressive tendencies.2[citation needed]
- Timber wolf
- Larger than their southern cousins, these otherwise mundane wolves hunt the frigid timberlands and mountains of the north.4
Wolf-like creatures
- Adlet: Wolf-like humanoids who well in Golarion's colder regions.5[citation needed]
- Akhlut: Gigantic shapechangers that look like a bizarre cross between a wolf and an orca.6[citation needed]
- Amarok: Solitary, intelligent wolf-like hunters of the northern wilderness.7[citation needed]
- Barghest: A fiendish race resembling both wolves and goblins.8[citation needed]
- Cerberi: Three-headed wolves who serve as guards in Hell.9
- Cinder wolf: Flame-resistant magical wolves who live in Varisia's Cinderlands.10
- Orthrus: A chimera-variant with two wolf heads and a tail that ends in the head of a dragon.11
- Peryton: Strange beast with the wings and hind legs of a bird of prey, forelegs of a deer, and the antlered head of a wolf.12[citation needed]
- Sarusan wolf: Alternate name for the wolf-like marsupial carnivore known as the thylacine.13
- Werewolf: A werecreature wolf.14[citation needed]
- Witchwarg: Large, white wargs with human intelligence and magical powers.[citation needed]
- Wolf-in-sheep's-clothing: Bizarre aberrations who disguise themselves to look like mundane objects in nature.15
- Warg: Oversized wolf-like creatures with evil dispositions and human intelligence.[citation needed]
On Golarion
Wolves are widespread throughout the wildernesses of Avistan: among other locations, wolves are found on Hagreach and Aegos islands in the Lands of the Linnorm Kings,16 the Forest of Veils,17 the Shudderwood in Ustalav,18 the Nesmian Plains of southern Nirmathas,19 and the Kamelands in the River Kingdoms.20 Wolves are also known to live in the forests of Qadira.21
A pack of awakened dire wolves lives in Sevenarches in the abandoned village known as Den,22 while undead dire wolves prowl among the Wolfcrags of the Worldwound.23
In geography
Many locations across Golarion are named for the wolf including:
- Wolf Gate
- Wolf's Ear: A town in Varisia annexed by Magnimar.24
- Wolf's Ravine in the River Kingdoms
- Wolf's Tooth: An island in the Arcadian Ocean off the coast of Cheliax.25
In history
- Wolf Winter: Name given to a terrible winter of 4450 AR in the nation of Lastwall.26
In magic
- Bag of tricks: Wolves are a common creature pulled from the rust bag of tricks.27[citation needed]
- Robe of bones: A skeletal wolf is one of the creatures embroidered into a robe of bones.28[citation needed]
- Summoning: Wolves and their larger dire wolf cousins can be summoned via the summon monster and summon nature's ally spells.2930[citation needed]
In religion
- Jezelda: Demon lord of werewolves.31
- Thron: A wolf spirit who sired the sibling gods Shelyn and Zon-Kuthon and was later transformed by the latter into the Prince in Chains to serve as his herald.32
Miscellaneous
- Andoran: The silver currency in Andoran is called a "silver wolf".33
- Animal companion: Wolves can often be found in the company of druids and rangers or as mounts for cavaliers and samurai.34[citation needed]
- The Devil in Gray is a winter wolf.3536
- House Graydon of Ustalav use the wolf as an heraldic symbol.37
- Lucimar, the Lich-Wolf, has a warg-like appearance.3839
- Orcs are known to train dire wolves as vicious mounts; doing so wins its orc rider much personal prestige.40
- The wolfberry bush is a carnivorous plant related to the assassin vine.41
- Wolfsbane is a tall plant with blue flowers capable of curing a werecreature curse if administered quickly enough.4243
